Container, 20th century
Bamboo
27.9 x 2.5 cm (11 x 1.5 in.)
The Marcia and John Friede Collection, a Promised Gift to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco L05.1.240
Artist Biography: (none)
PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "Like an Awa smoking tube published by Newton (1967: 15), this bamboo container shows a combination of "geometric and organic design elements" (ibid.). The organic design in the center is set off at both ends by the geometric design. For an example of a pipe from the Simbu rgion, showing the same combination, see Lenars, Strathern, and Stewart, 2004: 93. I have not been able to locate actual containers comparable to this object. It is a simple bamboo tube, yet it has the finesse of Japanese laquer works."
