PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The identification of this mask as Astrolabe Bay is based on Bodrogi, 1953, fig. 10, which illustrates an almost identical mask in the Néprajzi Múseum, Budapest. The Umboi (Rooke) Island mask in the Museum der Kulturen, Basel (Kaufmann, 1980, fig. 132), may represent an exportation of the style to the offshore islands. Christian Kaufmann states that the Umboi mask represents the bull-roarer and circumcision spirit called asa, which is the same representation as the mainland Astrolabe masks and telum figures. During initiation rituals the asa spirit, represented by the mask worn by a masquerader, would symbolically devour the initiate."
