Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Collected by Douglas Newton in Washkuk in 1965. Douglas Newton Collection, New York." (Catalog #343, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 139.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This object could only be worn by komaptam men, which was the highest grade in Washkuk society. Membership was limited to successful headhunters who had subsequently endured a multi-year purification ritual. Douglas Newton reports that the "komaptam wore black paint from head to foot and engraved coconut-shell penis covers such as this one. They wore clam-shell ovals above the forehead, the ears, and at the back of the head; these shells were colored with a mixture of black paint and the (headhunter) victim's blood. Boar tusk ornaments were worn in the ears, with the points up and in the nose, with points down. A brush of cassowary feathers was worn in the hair. Small woven bands were worn below the knee. They also wore on their backs net bags decorated with feathers and hornbill beaks, said to be used to pry arrow and spearheads out of wounds" (Newton, 1971: 54)." (Catalog #343, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 139.) 1971 - Newton, 1971: 54 (text) and fig. 102.
