Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This is probably a cult object. See Kelm 1966-68, vol. 1, no. 366 for a somewhat similar example in the Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin, collected on the Kaiserin-Augusta River Expedition in 1912-14. Kelm labels it a "roof finial," but May and Tuckson, 1982, fig. 97.6, say it was a "cult object." They add, "these [Porapora] cult objects, poison pots and clay heads appear to have links with both Yaul and Aibom pottery" (ibid., 251-52)."
