Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Collected on La Korrigane Expedition, 1935 (D.39.3/913). Bought by Comte Etienne de Ganay for a price of one songlet (3 Fr. 30). Robert Emile Bouchard Collection, Montreuil, France." (Catalog #260, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 124.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "These small hooks were used to hang carrying bags and baskets with food away from rats. Bunches of betel nuts, clothes, tools, drums, and flutes were also suspended. Spirits or mythical beings associated with specific clans were portrayed. Known by name, the hooks were given offerings of food and were expected to have a positive influence on the food supply (see Smidt, 1990: 254)."
