Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Louis Lemaire Collection, Amsterdam." (Catalog #158, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 108.) EXHIBITIONS: 1990 - Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterloo, 1990, "Sculpture from Africa and Oceania." PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "Dirk Smidt states these hooks were suspended both in family houses and in ceremonial men's houses. Sometimes they were hung beneath a flat, circular 'rat shield' made of wood or sago palm petiole via a rope or rattan string, which was fastened to a hole in the top or to a bracket carved out on the back of the figure. 'They had individual names, were given offerings of food, and were expected to have a positive influence on the food supply" (Smidt: 1990)."
