Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "These shields are only found on Karkar, a coastal island west of the Huon Peninsula. Stylistically, they relate more to New Britain shields than those from New Guinea. Arawe, Witu Islands, Nakanai, Sulka, and Maenge (Mengen) shields from New Britain also show red-colored can strips wrapped around the wood, but usually only around the middle, top, and bottom ends. (See Barbier-Mueller, 2000: 202-3, cat. no. 83; 214-21, cat. nos. 89-92; Heermann, 2002: 130-143, cat. nos. 82-86; 150-51, cat. nos. 90-91; 172, cat. no. 105.) The Karkar type of shield is unique in that it is fully covered with cane strips-and "the strips themselves are whipped with thin strands rolled around the cane" (ibid., 202)-in which particular designs have been worked by using different colors. There is a particular relationship with Arawe shields from south New Britain in that both the Arawe and Karkar shield consists of three planks joined together by strips of cane. In the Arawe case this type of construction is clearly visible, whereas the Karkar one is completely covered by cane strips. (See Schoeller, 1966, figs. 36, 37 for other examples. See also Kaeppler, Kaufmann, and Newton, 1997, figs. 196 and 197." (Catalog #368, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 144.)
