PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The two heads suggest that, perhaps in earlier times, actual human heads were used in ceremonies involving dishes of this kind. There was a smaller, somewhat related object in the Haus der Volker und Kulturen at St. Augustin (near Bonn). It is shallow and not nearly as canoe-shaped as this one, but it has a carved human head at either end (the heads facing each other) and a bowl-shaped part in between the heads (personal observation). There is also a double-headed figure (with a head at either end but not juxtaposed) at the Museum der Kulturen, Basel (see Kaufmann, 2003, fig. 46 and 87), described as 'Mother of the soil and the worms.'"
