Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Walter Randel Collection, New York." (Catalog #358, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 141.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The shield was made of a buttress root of a giant tree. In order to carry it over the shoulder, a strap of bark fiber was attached via the holes at the longer sides. In earlier publications such shields were coined as "door boards" (Bühler, 1960, captions to figs. 20, 21; Haberland, 1963: 117, caption to pl. 4) because it was thought that no shields would exist in the upper Sepik region (Haberland, 1963: 108, 117), a point of view that is no longer maintained (Dirk Smidt, personal communication). There is a related shield in the collection of the Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt, Germany. The two stylized figures face inward on that one. (See Menter, 2003, pl. 61.) For other related shields but with the stylized figure facing inward, see Bühler, 1960, fig. 21; and Bühler, 1969, fig. 60; these shields are in the collection of the Museum der Kulturen, Basel, and the Rietberg Museum, Zurich."
