PROVENANCE: "Collected in Singarin village on La Korrigane Expedition, 1935 (D.39.3/1005). Purchased by my mother, Mrs. Evelyn A. Hall, at Charles Ratton Gallery, Paris, in the 1950s." (Catalog #102, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 98.)
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The image of the mwai mask is combined with a tree kangaroo, morop, above, and a boar, nembren, below. A very closely related object in the Museum für Völkerkunde, Hamburg (9054-1), was collected in 1909 in "Kambrium Village" by F.E. Hellwig on the Hamburg South Seas Expedition. Both have the mwai image, which derives from the Iatmul people upstream in teh middle Sepik (see pl. 168). Other related objects in the Museum für Völkerkunde, Berlin, were collected in Kambaramba (Kumbragrumbra) village on the Kaiserin-Augusta River Expedition in 1912-14."
