Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Robert Emile Bouchard Collection, Montreuil, France." (Catalog #543, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 180.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This comparatively small headrest belongs to a particular type characterized by two korwar figures placed back to back. Often the torsos of the two figures merge. Examples without any figural carving but entirely decorated with openwork scroll patterns also occur. For variations in the rendering of the "Janus figure" theme in Geelvink Bay headrests, see Fuhrmann, 1922: 44047; Rocchi, 1976: 222, pl. 21; and Salvi, 1992: 64, cat. nos. 10, 11; see also de Clercq, 1893."
