Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Charles Ratton Collection, Paris." (Catalog #210, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 116.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "These bracelets were made and incised with geometric designs on the North Coast, and occurred widely in northern New Guinea. They were traded into the hinterland where they became highly valued items in ceremonial exchanges, including marriage transactions (Kocher Schmid in Greub, 1985: 206, re fig. 161). As can be noted here, the plaitwork attached where the ends of the ring overlap often is in the shape of a totemic animal, in this case a crocodile."
