Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Le Corneur-Roudillon Collection, Paris." (Catalog #172, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 110.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "Such masks were attached to the facades of both the family and the ceremonial houses but differing in size. It is probable that the mask illustrated here derives from a family house. Gable masks of family houses 'embodied female, clan-specific spirit beings, who were supposed to protect the inhabitants of the house from disaster' (Kocher Schmid in Greub, 1985: 184, no. 34). The motif of the protruding tongue is intended to repel enemies and hostile spirits (Davis and Davis, 1974: 45)."
