Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Collected by Randal Woodward on Murua (Woodlark) Island in 1913. S.G. Moriarty Collection, Sydney." (Catalog #410, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 152.) EXHIBITIONS: Date Unspecified - The Australian Museum, Sydney. PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "These mortars were used by old men whose teeth were no longer strong enough to crush betel nuts. The design of the mortar is exceptional and there are no comparable examples. The principal animal is thought to be a praying mantis and the small figures, its young."
