PROVENANCE: Jolika Collection of New Guinea Art
PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The bark boards, used in war magic, were chewed and than spat in divination ceremonies. Carl Schuster stated that the motifs on these boards were both a stylized human figure and a meander representing genealogical descent (Carpenter, 1986, reproduced in Res 6, fall 1966: 32, 45). Douglas Newton collected many examples of magic boards among the Bitara and Sanio (Saniyo)-Hiowe people of the middle April River. They will be in the Douglas Newton Collection at the de Young Museum." (Catalog #348, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 140.)
