Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Collected by Bruce Lawes in Nimbogu village in 1971. Bruce Lawes Collection, San Francisco." (Catalog #321, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 135.) EXHIBITIONS: 1991 - The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1991, "New Guinea Bone Carvings." 1977 - The Western Museums Association, Oakland, Calif., 1977, "The Bruce Lawes Collection." PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "The artist has carved the face of ngwalndu (see pl. 288 and 289) on the comb. Except for a broken tine, the comb is complete, with the fretted edge intentional and the holes at the edge for attaching ornaments. A related example was recently reported by Micahel Hamson from the Arapesh area. He was informed that the comb was tapped on a young man's head to empower him before battle. There is another in an Australian collection."
