Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Paul and Luisa Müller-Vanisterbiek Collection, Brussels. This collection, which also included magnificent African Art, was brought to my attention by Ben Tursch. It was an early source of some of the best things in our collection." (Catalog #521, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 175.) EXHIBITIONS: 1984 - Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1984, "Primitivism in 20th Century Art." PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This is a very old shield. A published example which has some elements in common with it is in the Rijksmuseum voor Vokenkunde, Leiden, collected by A.J. Gooszen in 1908 or 1913 (see Smidt, 1993: 73, pl. 7.4). The large W-shaped motif at the bottom probably represents the flying fox (tar), a headhunting symbol (see pl. 524). The zigzags have been described as "lightening" or "foam on the river" (Schneebaum, 1985: 186, 190), but they probably also refer to stylized ancestral human spirits." (Catalog #521, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 175.) 1984 - Rubin, 1984: 63.
