Artist Biography: (none) PROVENANCE: "Collected by Lajos Biró in 1898-99. Néprajzi Múseum, Budapest (56804); Walter Randel Collection, New York." (Catalog #377, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 146.) PUBLICATIONS: 2005 - "This is a highly stylized version of the traditional Tami headrest supported by two opposed figures. The arms are carved in the traditional manner but the legs have been replaced by circular forms. The torsos are extremely flattened so that when viewed from the end the heads of the figures appear to be noses on triangular pig-like faces, with the breasts serving as eyes and the navels as mouths. This kind of visual pun or double imaging marks the best of Tami artistry." (Catalog #377, New Guinea Art: Masterpieces from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, 2005, Volume 2, p. 146.) 1961 - Bodrogi, 1961a, fig. 74.
