Artist Biography: Born in London 13 January 1812. Son the engraver John Hill. Emigrated in 1819.To Philadelphia 1819, moved to New York 1823. 1823-1830 apprenticed to father. Topographical artist for N.Y. State Geological Survey 1836-1841, illustrated natural history publications, numerous watercolor views of New England and upstate New York for Smith Brothers publishing,influenced by John Ruskin after ca. 1850-1855. Lived in West Nyack, N.Y. from 1838. Died there 24 September 1879. (see except in file from The Brooklyn Museum: The New Path, Ruskin and the American Pre-Raphaelites, 1985. exh. cat. by Lynda S.
