Artist Biography: Born in West Woodstock County, Connecticut in 1876. Attended Woodstock Academy. Briefly attended art school in Boston, then went to New York and worked on the art staff of the New York American. In 1897 went to Paris and studied in Louvre and other art galleries as free lance.1899 returned to New York and an exhibition of his drawings, oils and lithographs made abrod was held. Period of interest in theatrical posters, in 1900 returned to Paris, Period of interest it caricatures and time of famous ones of Whistler, who inspired Haskell to try etchcing. In 1903 married Elizabeth Foley and settled on Staten Island. For next fifty years made many silverpoint drawings. In 1912 started to make his flick engravings. In 1914 visited California and Florida and realized fully that his gratest aesthetic power lay in his ability to express nature out in the open. In 1916 two retrospective shows were held, one at Kenndey's and other at the Chicago Art Institute. Wrote treatise on "Line" for Chicago exhibition catalogue. Wife died in 1918. Went to California. In 1920 married Emma Loveland Laumeister. From then on spent summers in Maine.
