Artist Biography: Born ANDREW WARHOLA. Artist and filmmaker. Studied at Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh. Lived in New York after 1952. An initiator and leading exponent of the Pop art movement of the 1960s whose mass-produced art apotheosized the supposed banality of commercial culture in the United States. A clever avant-gardist and adroit self-publicist, he projected an image of the artist as an impersonal, even vacuous, figure who is nevertheless a successful celebrity, businessman, and social climber. ~~Other dates:~b.
