Artist Biography: Painter and etcher; born 1860 Stoke-on-Trent, he began as a porcelin painter at age 14 for Maw & Co. He studied at teh School of Art at Coalbrookdale and at the Kensington Museum (Victoria & Albert) School. In 1879 he began studying at the Royal College of Art. He remained there for three years. He became the principle designer for several manufacturers. His art was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art from 1891 on., at the Royal Institute Oil Painters, and in exhibitions of applied arts. He was named an honorary member of the Royal College of Art and of the Guild of Art Workers ("Guilde des Travailleurs d'Art"). He was a specialist in gesso work and left his notes on this technique.
