Artist Biography: Carlo Cavaliere Maratta or Maratti. Painter and etcher. Born Camerano (Ancona) 15 May 1625, went to Rome 1636, entered studio of Andrea Sacchi where he stayed for 22 years. Worked for Church of S. Agostino, popes Innocent XII and Clement XI (restored Raphael's stanze). Entered Accademia S. Luca 1662 and served as principe. Created a cavaliere (knight of Christ) by Pope Clement XI, named first painter by Louis XIV. Most of his prints seem to be early works (pre-1660).
